Barbara's mother Amina, has an extensive background in music, having studied classical piano for 10 years, and having danced as a young girl. Due to Barbara's talent and passion for ballroom, Amina took up dancing again as an adult in order to help Barbara. Amina acts as coach when Barbara is not in the studio studying under one of the professionals. Amina has choreographed most of the showcase routines. Amina is also Barbara's primary teacher in her home schooling environment, as she is a "stay-at-home" mom. "Staying at home, taking care of my family, and educating my beautiful daughter are just fine with me,” Amina has said. Barbara is getting a well-rounded education, as Amina has a background in medicine, and Jim has a background in engineering.
Barbara's father
(Jim) also has an extensive background in music, having played the piano
for 5 years as a child, and playing the drums since 4 years old and
still going. Jim also has an extensive background in sports, including
diving, gymnastics and martial arts. Jim took up ballroom in August of
2004, to step in for Barbara, and keep her practice up during their
travels. Both Jim and Amina insist on the volunteer part of their
dancing, to give Barbara a taste of what it's like to help others and be
thankful for a talent.
Barbara won the national championship at the Emerald Ball in Los
Angeles in May, 2002, and has not been defeated since that time.
