Florida Panhandle Dance Location Reports

April 7, 2006,  Pensacola Swing, Pensacola, Florida, There is a family in this city that is doing something that should be noticed throughout North America. This family, Travis and Meagan Glover and Travis's mother Glenda Glover have been promoting the growth of a very active swing dance organization for the past 5 years. The Pensacola Swing Club caters primarily to the young crowd from 8 or 10 years of age to 30's, but there were also many older dancers present.  At the dance we visited on Friday at 9pm. there were about 200 young dancers and a few older ones as well. It was wonderful to see this many taking swing lessons then practicing their skills to the music supplied by Travis. The charge was only $5.00 for swing (Lindy) Lesson and Dance. The dances are held in an old American Legion Hall. The hall is large with a good smooth wood dance floor. Lessons are taught by Travis and Meagan who are both great Lindy dancers and who were dressed to look the part of similar dancers of the lindy era.
Travis placed a very large movie screen above the stage on which he continually played old swing dance movies.
This is a great atmosphere in which to encourage these young people to congregate, in a clean busy beautiful environment.
What this family are doing is to give these young people an alternative to drinking and smoking in bars. A place where they learn in preparation for a cleaner, better and happier life. Today in dance floors throughout North America you will find dancers in their 60,70,80,90's and even in their 100's. These are the dancers that learned this beautiful sport when they were young and are enjoying a fuller healthier life.
By the way Travis also played fox Trots, a Mambo and other dance styles during the evening and I was amazed as to how many of the very young knew how to dance to these different styles.
Travis, I want to congratulate you and your family for what you are doing for these young people in your community. You are giving the young in your district an alternative healthy life style. And I really don't think you realize  how important your work is in this regard. It would be wonderful if you could duplicate what you are doing in every town and city in North America.  Anyways, that should be your goal.  Thank you.
